General Information

The Governors at Adlington Primary

There are four types of school Governors at Adlington:

  • Parent Governors - elected by the parents and carers of children in school
  • Co-opted Governors - selected by the Governing Body to bring the expertise of the local community to the school
  • A Local Authority Governor - these Governors are appointed by the Local Authority and represent the political parties on the Council
  • Staff Governors – A maximum of two staff Governors - including the headteacher 

At Adlington Primary our Governing Body consists of 11 governors including:

  • 2 parent governors
  • 2 staff governors
  • 6 co-opted governors
  • 1 vacancy for a co-opted governor


John Brooks - Chair of Governors

Co-opted Governor

Term of Office: November 2019 - November 2023

John is an experienced governor, who has worked with other primary schools in Cheshire East as a governor and in the Chair of Governors role.  He is also a trustee of the Fallibrdoome Trust.  John sits on the Finance, Premises,  Curriculum  and Leadership committees. He is also the Governor responsible for Health and Safety within the school.

Steph Swinson 


Term of Office: September 2019 - 

Steph took up the post of Headteacher of the school in September 2019. With 18 years experience of teaching in primary schools in Staffordshire and Blackpool, Steph brings to the school a wealth of experience and knowledge, She has a keen interest in educational research and is committed to providing the best educational experiences for every child  in her care. Her door is always open and  she is always willing to help  pupils, parents, governors and staff.  Steph has three chldren, her two sons are educated locally and her daughter is at university.

Nancy Tennant

Co-opted Governor - Chair of Management and Leadership committee

Term of Office: October 2015 - August 2020

Nancy Tennant is a co-opted a member of the Personnel and Curriculum sub-committees. Nancy has specific responsibilities for Special Educational Needs, Literacy & Safeguarding. Prior to retiring she was a Paediatric Occupational Therapist . An Adlington resident for nearly 50 years and long serving Parish Councillor. Nancy has  three adult children and six school-age grandchildren.Her interests are: walking, gardening, playing the clarinet and painting - time permitting.

Amanda Banks

Co-opted Governor - Vice-Chair & Chair of Curriculum Committee

Term of Office: May 2017 - September 2021

Amanda is a Lecturer in Education at the University of Manchester, with research and teaching specialisms in digital technologies and communication in education, computing pedagogy and data sciences. She is married with two children at primary school in Poynton and enjoys mountaineering and theatre.

Previously Amanda has worked as a teacher of ICT in a secondary school, as regional manager for the North West Network of Excellence for Computing Teachers and sat on the Department for Education's National Expert Group for Computing. Amanda is also a voluntary director of a not-for-profit pre school.

Amanda sits on the curriculum and management & leadership committees and is a link governor for maths and computing.

Nick Paul

Co-opted Governor - Chair of Finance and Premises Committee

Term of Office: November 2019 - November 2023

Nick has been a Parent Governor at the school for over 14 years and is now a co-opted governor.  Nick is married to Melanie and has five children who have attended the school continuously from 1997-2019. 

Nick is the Managing Director of a specialist recruitment business and enjoys cycling and skiing. He is the Chair of the Premises and Finance sub-committees. Nick is the Governor responsible for Science.

Mat Hanson

Co-opted Governor

Term of office March 2018 - March 2022

Mat is a Co-opted governor and currently sits on the Finance and Premises sub-committees.

Mat lived in Adlington in 2005, then moved to Bollington, then Cheadle Hulme and has now recently returned to Adlington once again in 2017. He lives on Brookledge Lane with his wife Nicole, daughter Olivia, who is at  Adlington Primary, and younger son Thomas.

Mat studied law at the University of Sheffield and then moved into the accounting profession. He is an ACMA Chartered Accountant and currently the Finance Director for a utilities infrastructure company in South Manchester. In the past he has worked for Bentley Motors, Tyco and been head of Finance for Canterbury of New Zealand.

If spare time can be found he enjoys running, cycling and general fitness.



Gary McNeely

Parent Governor

Term of office November  2018 - November 2022

Gary currently works as a Sales Director for Packaging Products (Coatings) Ltd in Collyhurst, Manchester.  The company manufactures a range of special coated papers and supply throughout UK & Europe.

Gary lives in Bollington with his wife Emma and children Paddy and Maeve.  Both children attend Adlington Primary School.

Gary is a passionate football fan in his spare time and is currently the manager of the Bollington United U10 Cobras.



James Taylor

Co-opted Governor

Term of office November  2018 - November 2022

James is a co-opted governor who lives in Disley, East Cheshire.  He lives with his wife Dawn and two children, Isla and Cillian.

James has worked in IT sales for the last 20 years. He currently works for an international IT manufacturer, specialising in power protection.

In his spare time he likes to run and has previously completed multiple ultra and marathon events.

James is the link governor for KS1 and sits on the subcommittee for Ofsted Readiness, Curriculum and Leadership and Management.

Business Interests

No governors have any business interests with Adlington Primary.
